Due to budget cuts the Island County Prosecutor may only prosecutor DUI and DV cases

Island County Greg Banks presented an option of suspending prosecution of all misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes except DUI and domestic violence assault cases. This would allow him to eliminate one of the two deputy prosecutors in district court, plus one paralegal, in order to meet the proposed 10 percent reduction. The option, he said, would amount to amnesty for those who commit traffic crimes, petty theft, vandalism, trespassing, animal control violations, pot possession and many other misdemeanor crimes in the county. That's about 1,000 cases a year that wouldn't be prosecuted.

Chico Meets His Maker

Name: Diego “Chico” Corrales

Claim to Fame: Former Featherweight and Lightweight World Boxing Champion

Date of DUI: October 2005, March 2006, Died May 7, 2006

Facts: Corrales was killed in a motorcycle crash. Toxicology tests have shown that Diego Corrales was three times over the alcohol limit when he crashed his motorcycle and died. The boxer known as 'Chico' was killed in a three-vehicle accident near his Las Vegas home on May 7 this year aged only 29. Corrales had a history of drunken driving while it's also been confirmed by court officals and the state Department of Motor Vehicles that he was riding without a valid license. Corrales' blood-alcohol content was 0.25 percent at the time of the crash and the legal limit for drivers in Nevada is 0.08 percent. "It's quite possible that, had he not been impaired, he could have prevented his accident," Las Vegas police Sgt. Tracy McDonald told ESPN. "Bottom line, no one else did anything wrong. He basically killed himself." Pat Lamparelli, a Corrales family friend, has said he was not surprised to learn Corrales had been drinking before he crashed his 2007 Suzuki. The Nevada DMV has said Corrales' vehicle and motorcycle licenses were revoked in July 2006 for a drunken driving conviction on an October 2005 arrest. He faced arrest stemming from a failure to appear in January in a Las Vegas court on a March 2006 DUI arrest, the Clark County district attorney's office said. Charges in that case also included speeding and evading a police officer.

Outcome: Corrales, who was wearing a helmet, died from a head injury.

DUI task force arrests 50 in Tacoma says Snohomish County DUI Attorney

The latest DUI emphasis patrol in Tacoma netted the largest total number of motorists taken into custody since the emphasis patrols began over 15 years ago, according to Pierce County officials.

The June 26 emphasis patrol, sponsored by the Tacoma Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force, arrested 16 drivers for DUI and 11 for felony and misdemeanor drug offenses or outstanding warrants. Another 23 drivers were arrested for driving while their licenses were either suspended or revoked. One 32-year-old female driver arrested for DUI had been arrested for DUI three times previously. A stolen car was recovered and one motorcyclist had his bike impounded because he did not have a valid motorcycle endorsement on his license. In addition, 29 drivers also were cited for having no insurance.

Most of the drivers apprehended Saturday night were arrested in the vicinity of Portland and McKinley avenues, South Tacoma Way and Sixth Avenue, north of Sprague. Drivers who attempted to drive after drinking too much at the Taste of Tacoma were arrested for DUI when they left the traffic-snarled city streets surrounding the event and began driving dangerously on Highway 16 and I-5. Participating in the June 26 patrol, hosted by the Tacoma Police Department, were the Bonney Lake, Sumner, Fife, Milton, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, Tacoma and Lakewood Police Departments along with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and the Washington State Patrol. The X-52 patrol was funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Yesterday, along with task forces in Snohomish and King counties, the Tacoma Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force launched a special team who will intensely hunt impaired drivers over the next two years. The new Target Zero Team, made up of six additional troopers and three additional deputies and officers, will work ten-hour shifts, four days a week solely focused on apprehending drug and alcohol impaired drivers on Pierce County's roads. "There will be nowhere impaired drivers can hide in Pierce County," said John Cheesman, chief of the Fircrest Police Department and chair of the Tacoma Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force.

The Washington State Patrol has teamed up with local law enforcement in Snohomish, King, and Pierce Counties to increase patrol and educate officers on where and how best to execute arrests of drunk drivers. In Trial of Repeat Drunk Driver, Arresting Officer may have his Credibility Challenged with Evidence of His Own Recent DUI Arrest : DUI Lawyer Mukilteo, DUI Attorney Everett

Lovejoy, Attorney at Law – Prosecutors are challenging in Superior Court the District Court Judge’s ruling that evidence of an arresting officer’s recent arrest for DUI can be raised by the defendant in a drunk driving case. The District Court judge ruled that evidence of the officer’s statements during his own arrest undermine his credibility as a witness in the defendant’s case. For example, the officer was arrested with a blood alcohol level of .11. When he was pulled over and asked how much he had to drink that night, he claimed he drank only a 25-ounce beer eight hours before he was stopped. Read the Seattle PI’s story here.

Blue Devil Less than Saintly

Name: J.J. Redick

Claim to Fame: At Duke, he became the leading scorer in ACC history.

Date of DUI: June 13, 2006

Facts: Redick, The Associated Press Player of the Year, also was charged with unlawful use of highways for making an illegal U-turn. Redick, who has a Virginia driver's license, lost his driving privileges in North Carolina for 30 days. The 21-year-old Redick was released on $1,000 bond shortly after being taken before a Durham County magistrate. The arresting officer wrote in his report that Redick had "very glassy eyes, strong odor of alcohol coming from breath." Redick had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11. The legal limit for drivers in North Carolina is 0.08. Redick was arrested soon after 1 a.m. when he turned around as he approached a license check point near the Duke campus. He pulled into a parking lot of an apartment complex after police pursued him. Records indicate that Redick's blood alcohol level was 0.11 when he was booked at the Durham County Jail early Tuesday. The legal limit for drivers in North Carolina is 0.08. Outcome: Redick plead guilty to DUI and received one year of probation and had his driver’s license suspended for 60 days. He also was required to pay $410 in court costs and fees and he must serve 24 hours of community service within 90 days of sentencing.

Did You Know? The DUI occurred a week before the NBA draft. This incident didn’t deter the Orlando Magic from picking Redick in the first round.
