TACOMA, Wash. -- A Tacoma police sergeant has been charged with drunk driving after his BAC levels showed he was nearly three times the legal limit. Sgt. David W. Alred, a 23-year veteran of the force, was cited with the gross misdemeanor after he was involved in a two-car collision at South Pine and Center Street while off-duty on Dec. 12. According to the statement of probable cause, Alred, 52, had sped past a car, then cut it off as they both neared a red light. Alred then rear-ended the car that was stopped in front of him at the light, investigators said. As the officer approached Alred sitting in his car, the officer "noted the odor of intoxicants and that the defendant's eyes were watery," the statement said, and when the officer asked him what had happened, Alred said, "the guy stopped in front of me."
Alred also showed "poor finger dexterity" as he handed over his license, according to the document. Alred said he "had been drinking, saying three beers," detectives said, and refused to take a field sobriety test.
Alred was struggling with his balance "and stumbled to the point of nearly falling," the statement said. He was given a breathalyzer test, which resulted in two separate readings of .227.
